DARTS titan Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor has called for the Professional Darts Corporation to consider hosting more events in places the sport currently neglects, such as Weymouth.

Stoke-born Taylor, 58, was in the popular seaside resort along with fellow stars Bobby George, Luke Humphries, Richard North and Andy Jenkins for the Weymouth Darts Masters at Weymouth Pavilion.

Taylor, whose staggering career included winning an unprecedented 16 world titles, retired from the game after his 7-2 loss to Rob Cross in the PDC World Championship Final at Alexandra Palace in January.

The Power’s glittering honours list also yielded 16 World Matchplay, 11 World Grands Prix and six Premier League victories amongst numerous others and the Englishman was able to stage a ‘meet and greet’ with fans before showcasing his skills on the Ocean Room stage.

Speaking to Echosport, Taylor felt such events bore “no pressure” on the tungsten megastar’s shoulders.

He said: “We came down from Stoke on the train, one journey, absolutely perfect.

“I’ve never been to Weymouth before. I’ve only come when it’s night-time but it looks really clean. I’d love to see it in the daytime, it looks really nice.

“It’s a bit of fun, a chance to meet people I’ve never met before and I can just go out and enjoy it – there’s no pressure on me any more.

“These are the type of places now that the PDC should be looking at, places like Weymouth which are untouched really, that haven’t had tournaments here. I would say have a look around here, now.”

Asked for an early tip for a 2019 PDC Worlds winner, set to start on Thursday, December 13, Taylor put forward fellow Stoke player and two-time world champion Adrian Lewis as a contender for the coveted crown.

He said: “Who’s going to win it? I think Adrian might do well because he’s been under the cosh a little bit and he needs to do well.

“When his back’s against the wall he does quite well. James Wade’s playing brilliant, he’s another one. He hasn’t won it but is capable. Maybe this might give him the belief that he needs.”
