GOAL-HUNGRY Dorchester Town boss Steve Thompson has called on the Magpies to “score more freely” ahead of their Evo-Stik Southern Premier South clash with Chesham United at the Clayson Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

Thompson’s comment was made in relation to Dorchester’s form in front of goal in the league, which has produced just three strikes in four games.

The Magpies’ FA Trophy exploits have since yielded six goals in three games, including a deserved 3-1 win over Totton in the second qualifying round last time out.

Subsequently, Thompson feels facing bottom side Chesham presents 18th-placed Dorchester with a “good chance” of taking all three points.

He told Echosport: “Chesham are like us, down the lower end of the table. Obviously they’ll be as desperate for points as we are.

“It is a good chance, we’re four games unbeaten. We’ve only let in two goals in the last four games.

“I’d like us to be scoring more freely but it’s nice to get three in the last game.”

With Chesham six points adrift of safety, seven behind Dorchester, Thompson conceded there would be higher expectations on his side before the contest.

He said: “When you play a side that’s bottom of the league, everyone expects you to win. I wouldn’t see that as a massive pressure.

“You take it like any other game, you treat them with the same respect you treat every team.

“There are reasons why results might not have gone right for them.

“They’ve got a new management team in place in the last three or four weeks and I think there has been a slight upturn.

“They went to Worthing last week and only got beaten 1-0. With their new management team in they’ll be hoping that they can pick up.”

Thompson also urged his charges to begin an ascent of the table, with a congested mid-table providing an opportunity to make ground on their immediate rivals.

“We need to start climbing the table, but every win has to be earned. The last four games has been off the back of only letting in two goals because we’re not scoring loads.

“Having said that, we certainly needed to tighten up and we have done that since the Harrow game, which was unacceptable defensively.

“We need to carry on that and hopefully be as clinical as we were in that 10-minute spell when we scored three goals on Saturday,” he said.

Dorchester have one remaining slot for a loan player on their roster and Thompson revealed he is searching to find a suitable addition to the squad.

He said: “I’m always on the lookout. It’s a little bit more difficult with the fifth one because you know that’s it, then.

“It takes two to tango, or three to tango, because the player has to want to do it, and the club. It’s not just about what we want, it’s about what other clubs and players want as well.”

Dorchester have the luxury of a fully-fit squad to face the Generals after Josh Williams missed the Totton win with illness, although fellow winger Tom Blair serves the second game of his four-match suspension.
