DORCHESTER 90

NORTH WILTS 53

DORCHESTER cruised past North Wilts to comfortably seal progression into the next round of the Vivienne Trophy, to set up a clash with Moonfleet.

With the Denny Cup and Yetton Trophy teams safely into the final 32 of their respective national competitions, it was the turn of the ladies’ Vivienne Trophy squad to enter the fray.

Their first round opponents entertained the two travelling Dorchester triples but found their visitors in unforgiving mood.

Chris Jones, Wendy Webb and Val Cornick only needed a couple of ends to find the pace of the carpet.

However, they soon found it and went on to win the next eight

ends to achieve a dominant 17-4 position, before taking their foot of the gas over the final

three ends to finish 17-10 to

the good, over Ann Shaw’s threesome.

The companion Dorchester away triple of Hazel Ryan, Judith King and skip Fran Dyer were even more ruthless.

They took the game to their opponents, skipped by Lyn Brown, who had no answer to Dorchester’s power play, as the county town side inflicted a 32-12 pasting on their opponents.

At the Dorchester home venue at the Sandringham Sports Centre, it was not quite the same story, when North Wilts visitors Beryl Waters, Rosemary Fitzpatrick and their skip Mo Oram took the opening part of the game by storm to rack up a 20-2 lead and seemed destined for a cricket score.

To their credit Val Ghose, Janine Scola and skip Jenny Trotman then put Dorchester back on track, with an unexpected recovery that reduced the North Wilts lead to just four shots at 20-16 and place victory within reach.

Having done all the hard work, the Dorchester triple then dropped eight shots on the final two ends to lose out 28-16.

The performance of the day came from Dorchester’s Elaine Anthony, Sue Lofthouse and diminutive skip Kay Johns who did not allow North Wilts skip Barbara Porter and co a sniff at the jack, as they accumulated 25 shots and conceded only three shots all afternoon.

The overall 37 shots victory enabled Dorchester to cruise into the next round and have their sights now set upon rivals Moonfleet who had a day off, as Bridport had conceded the match in advance.

The next round takes place in the New Year and Dorchester, who have reached the final, and a semi-final in the last three years hope to maintain their momentum.
