Goodship 90

WEYMOUTH striker Brandon Goodship dramatically handed the Terras a 1-0 Ridgeway derby win over Dorchester Town with a 90th-minute tap-in during a luke-warm Evo-Stik Southern Premier South clash at the Clayson Stadium.

Goodship had struck the bar in the first half while Dorchester were restricted to chances for Antonio Diaz and Cameron Murray before a Sam Jackson cross hit the far post as the hosts went nine games without beating their enemies.

Dorchester remained unchanged from the side that began Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Met Police, with centre-back Brennan Camp making his first appearance in the Magpies’ squad since his work experience loan deal from Bournemouth.

Weymouth, meanwhile, made two changes as Josh Carmichael and Abdulai Baggie came in for Jordan Ngalo and Yemi Odubade respectively.

After a 10-minute delay to kick-off due to crowd congestion, Dorchester’s Ben Seymour and away skipper Jake McCarthy both shanked early chances before the latter forced Magpies’ goalkeeper Kingsley Latham into a flying stop with a long-range shot.

From the resultant Josh Wakefield corner, Latham acrobatically tipped over Josh Carmichael’s flicked near-post header to the disbelief of the Terras’ man.

Weymouth tested Latham once more when Zubar, having stayed up from a corner, stooped bravely to brush a header at the Southampton loanee from Baggie’s cross.

Mark Molesley’s men continued to dominate and should have scored following a lovely move in which Ben Thomson tucked the ball round the corner for Baggie who squared for the advancing Goodship to crash a shot against the bar.

In a rare foray upfield, Murray warmed the gloves of Jordan Seabright after a mazy dribble, only to see his 25-yard effort caught by the Weymouth keeper.

More joy for Dorchester came on the counter when Callum Rose, who recovered after treading on the ball, supplied Diaz who embarked on a slalom run before working Seabright low to his right, the Terras’ keeper pushing the ball to safety.

Weymouth responded just before the interval when Calvin Brooks won a soft free-kick, allowing the wily Wakefield to bend the set-piece around the wall and against the right-hand post when he had shaped to cross.

An improved Dorchester rattled the uprights after the break when Harry Kite’s dangerous ball across the six-yard box came out to Sam Jackson, who jinked infield at the byline before scooting a low cross beyond Seymour and against the far post with Seabright beaten.

Weymouth again replied when Josh Carmichael attempted a dipping Paolo di Canio-esque volley, prompting Latham into another fingertip save.

Carmichael’s attempt stirred the Terras and Brooks might have done better from a pinpoint Baggie cross, electing to go airborne when volleying at goal and skying his shot.

Weymouth had by now regained their control of the game and a Brooks cross from the right picked out Thomson in space, only for the impressive Latham to catch his downward header.

Both sides made a flurry of substitution as a winner was chased, although chances were at a premium as the half endured.

Dorchester had a slight concern over Kite, who required treatment for a thigh injury, before Seymour’s legs tangled over a Jackson cross from the left, bundling the ball out of play.

Weymouth nearly broke Dorchester hearts when Thomson picked out Baggie on the edge of the area, but Latham leapt to his left to catch the Sierra Leone wingers’ strike.

However, the Terras landed the decisive blow in the final minute of normal time through the irrepressible Goodship.

Substitute Odubade collected a through ball in the left channel and his deflected shot was superbly clawed out in a reaction save by Latham only as far as the predatory Goodship, who tucked home the loose ball from six yards to give the Terras all three points.

Dorchester can count themselves unlucky to lose the game but Weymouth will point towards enjoying the majority of the sharpest chances as justification for winning a largely lacklustre Ridgeway derby.
