BALTI SPORTS 4

SHERBORNE TOWN RES 1

BALTI Sports recorded their second successive victory with a 4-1 thumping of Sherborne Town Reserves in their Dorset Premier League contest at Weymouth College.

Sports’ victory handed them the double over the Zebras after their 3-2 win at the Terrace in October but the three points were far from certain after conceding an early goal.

A Town attack was broken up by Balti but the ball fell kindly to Chris Martin, who lashed home a powerful drive into the top corner from 25 yards to rock the Weymouth side after just two minutes.

Martin’s strike unsettled Sports but once Marco Nott’s men regained their composure – largely through the influential Ethan Devaney – Balti soon equalised.

Devaney gambled on a cross from Danny Andrews and the midfielder went one-on-one with the Zebras’ goalkeeper, slotting home to level.

Five minutes before half-time, the turnaround was complete when Devaney received possession 20 yards out with his back to goal before taking a touch and scoring with a delightful curling shot.

Balti continued their dominance after the break when Chris Reader smashed in from two yards when a corner once more fell kindly.

At 3-1, Balti were cruising but Andrews put the victory in jeopardy by first earning a sin bin for protesting against a decision to award a goal-kick over a corner and then seeing red for further venting his frustration at the referee.

Balti defended stoutly with 10 men amid heavy Zebras’ pressure and were rewarded on the break late on when a perfectly-weighted pass from Devaney put Charlie Kenderdine clean through to finish.

Speaking to Echosport, a delighted Nott said: “We’re back to our best and scoring goals is what we do.

“Before we were playing 4-5-1 and we were a bit more restricted to how many chances we created. Going back to 4-4-2 we started clicking again and look dangerous going forward.

“It was a good, tough game. We found a bit of confidence from winning the week before against Bridport. We started as we finished the game before.

“The lads did really well when they came off the bench against Bridport, so we stuck at that on the front foot and played really well.

“As we’ve just figured out, we attack better than we defend. It was a positive performance, a couple of little negatives in there but certainly more positives.”
