DISMAYED Dorchester Town boss Steve Thompson felt the Magpies’ chastening 6-0 Evo-Stik Southern Premier South loss to Farnborough at the Clayson Stadium was “a game too far”.

Thompson’s men were embarking on the sixth of seven weeks in which they face playing two matches but the manner of this home defeat, the Magpies’ biggest since a 10-0 loss to Salisbury in October 2016, was inexplicable to the Dorchester manager.

He told Echosport: “It’s not that much of a shock because it’s happened before.

“It was a game too far, we shouldn’t have been playing. We’ve played Saturday-Tuesday for the last six weeks. The game should’ve been rearranged for another day.

“Having said that, it’s awful to get beaten at home 6-0. We must have had nine or 10 chances and couldn’t score one of them.

“The thing is, they had at least 10 as well and scored six.

“We were missing some key players but there’s a lot of recovering to do now before Chesham (on Saturday). I’m very disappointed.”

Thompson refused to blame tiredness after a 2-1 FA Trophy loss to Barnet on Saturday, adding: “I wouldn’t use that as an excuse, there were some fresh players in.

“I just feel that it’s more than Saturday, probably the fact that we’ve played Saturday-Tuesday for the last six weeks, but you’ve still got to do a lot better than that.”
