MOONFLEET 54

DORCHESTER ladies are on course for success in the national Vivienne Trophy after overcoming rivals Moonfleet.

With the county town club’s Yetton Trophy squad safely through to the quarter-finals, the Vivienne team were out to emulate them.

Two triples home and away resulted in a home shout for Dorchester’s Elaine Anthony, Sue Lofthouse and Kay Johns against Glynis Thorne, Val Spicer and Madge Churches.

Having finished top rink in the previous round the Dorchester trio carried on from where they left off, and powered their way to a 13-1 lead and gave little away, winning all but four of 18 ends.

Johns’ final tally of 29 shots to five was the cornerstone of the county town victory and gave them a second successive top rink performance.

Dorchester away triple of Chris Jones, Hazel Newboult and Val Cornick had a short trip over the Ridgeway to take on the Moonfleet trio of Eileen Devonald, Batt, Celia Robertson and skip Rita Payne and the visitors were on course at 5-1 up, before being dramatically pegged back by Payne who then scored heavily to establish a commanding 20-7 lead for Moonfleet.

Despite a five-shot pickup for Dorchester, it was Moonfleet who eventually ran out 26-12 to the good, giving both clubs a big winning rink at home.

Moonfleet’s Ruth Neary, Kerry Wilson and skip Liz Wilson also had home advantage as they entertained Hazel Ryan, Judith King and Fran Dyer.

The Dyer combination soon got into gear winning six of the 18 ends and amassed a winning total of 23 shots allowing the Williams’ rink just eight shots

The Dorchester companion home triple of Wendy Webb, Janine Scola and skip Jenny Trotman took time to settle and found themselves 7-4 down early on to Julie Watts, Jo Taylor and skip Helen Monelle.

Both sides had good ends en route to a mid-point 16-14 advantage to Dorchester, before Trotman had the better of the run in and finished 22-15 to the good, which sealed a comprehensive overall result for Dorchester.

Having now reached the last 16 stage of the competition, Dorchester focus on their next match against Honiton who had their match against ISCA Exeter conceded.

Dorchester reached the semi-finals of the Vivienne Trophy last season and appeared in the final in 2016 losing out to Norfolk who have been eliminated from this season’s tournament.
