WEYMOUTH claimed a brace of victories to edge ever closer to the National League title, after wins against Southampton VC and Wiltshire Mavericks.

In the first game of the day, Weymouth were clear favourites after ending up convincing winners in the reverse fixture verses Wiltshire Mavericks.

The league leaders were slow to get started however, and a lot of mistakes were made in key areas, despite this, Weymouth did not trail too far behind going into the middle of the set.

A few choice words seemed to inspire the players on court and as a result everyone upped their game.

After a few aces from Ryan Stout, Weymouth had built a good lead and finished the set 25-16.

The Seasiders did not have the same problems in the second and third sets with players showing much more consistency. Both strong hitting and solid blocking from Mike Powell had the crowd thrilled and Elliott Sawyer’s pass was on point to set up some inspired attacking play.

Weymouth ran out convincing 3-0 winners, 25-16, 25-9, 25-10.

The final game of the triangular fixture saw Weymouth come up against Southampton VC. They pounced straight out the blocks after their previous game. Southampton couldn’t keep up with pace and struggled to put any form of attack together. Weymouth’s killer instinct was outstanding and the wrapped up the first set 25-7.

The home side started to put up more of a fight in the second set and the league leaders may have taken their foot off the gas slightly. Consequently, points were traded more frequently resulting in a closer set score but the same result ensued, Weymouth winning 25-18.

For the third set Terry Oldrid took the place of Liam Tewkesbury as an outside-hitter and settled straight in making clever shot choices. Last year’s South West champions, showed their class once again both in attack and defence as they took the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.

This makes it 12 games unbeaten in their first season in the National League.

If Weymouth can keep this run up and win their next two games, next month, they will claim the league crown.
