TREVOR Senior has paid tribute to former Dorchester Town team-mate Paul Thorne praising him for rarely having a bad game.

Thorne’s death was announced by the Magpies this week, with Thorne having played 10 years for the Magpies after joining from Bridport in August 1979.

Senior said: “He would play a great game every week, I cannot remember him ever having a bad game, he was very consistent. He had a great left foot on him.

“He created a lot of goals for me, heading was my strength and he certainly played to that. He put some great balls in.

“He wasn’t a tricky winger, but he would get past people, he was quite quick.”

Thorne, 62, made 265 league appearances for the Magpies, scoring 47 league goals in that time.

However, he will be remembered for his strike against Bournemouth, which helped the Magpies secure a replay in the second round of the 1981 FA Cup, which they went on to lose 2-1.

Senior said: “That is the big goal I remember, I think there was 5,000 plus at the old ground.

“I remember him scoring and we got a 1-1 draw and the crowd were ecstatic. We were a bit unlucky not to win that first game, but eventually lost 2-1 in the second game at Bournemouth.

Senior also paid tribute to his character, praising him for mixing in well with the team.

Senior said: “Paul was just a quiet lad, just a real nice lad that mixed in with the team well.

“He was quite unassuming but he had a sense of humour.

“He always had a smile on his face, he was always quite happy.

“I can’t think of anything negative to say about the chap, he was just a great bloke.”

Dorchester will hold a minute’s silence prior to hosting Poole today, and a tribute will be in the programme.
