TEENAGE ace Jess Moggeridge impressed for new team Dorchester YMCA during their 25-11 loss to Budmouth B in Weymouth & District League Division One.

Moggeridge (5) played only her second match for the YMCA and pushed Rob Hawes (9) to a fifth leg before beating Tom Cherry (4) in four very close legs.

But Jed Brackenridge (9) maintained his fine form, not dropping a leg, to give Budmouth B a comfortable win.

A battle of the heavyweights saw Park District A fall to a 24-12 loss to title-chasing Springfield A with Jeff Rigby maintaining his 100 per cent record.

Amazingly after 27 matches he has only lost two legs so far, one to Red Triangle’s Mike Spracklen and the other to Ray Cody.

Cody (6) was Park’s top scorer with Luke Hunt and Mike Doyle picking up two legs apiece.

Rigby was ably supported by both Tim Scott (6) and Andy Pipe (6) and he even managed to pip Doyle and Cody to the doubles, partnering Scott, in coming from 2-1 down to take it in the fifth.

In the battle of the Xs, it was Colliton that came out on top 27-7 over two-man Park District.

Mick Hogan (9) started things off well for the home side by defeating John Ryan (7) 3-2 in a high quality match.

Andy Crouch (9) then repeated the scoreline in defeating Ryan, though the latter did manage to see off Raj Lehal 3-0 (6). Wins over Monique Chester and a win in the doubles ensured a very comfortable victory for the home side.

Preston B expected to be on the back foot against Budmouth A but started fairly well with Roger Lovell (1) taking a set off Nathan Calton. Budmouth then took control and it wasn’t until the doubles that Preston gained another point in their 30-2 defeat.

Will Jolliffe had to overcome a stubborn Terry Whitworth who finally succumbed 17-15 in the third set. Eddie Chapman bravely played up for Preston but met the same fate as his teammates as Budmouth returned to the top of the table.

In Division Two it was as expected with Shipton Gorge B being too strong for the C team in a 29-9 win. Tom Baldry (4) found his strongest form to find himself 2-1 up in last singles match.

Graham Albertella (8) had not found himself under any real pressure until Baldry was able to play the angles and use a good mixture of blocks, forehand and backhand drives with the odd drop shot thrown in to keep Albertella moving about and force a few more errors than he usually gives away.

Albertella came back strong in the fourth leg leading 6-0 only for Baldry to level before Albertella again took control and won the next five points.

However, Baldry was far from beaten and re-established his consistent attacking game, pushing the last leg to deuce, and eventually won the match 14-12 with some very competitive and varied rallies from both players.

In a thrilling match, second-placed Springfield B were pushed by All Saints A but eventually ran out 20-13 winners.

Chris Whitefield was top scorer for Springfield on the night with a maximum and Paul Arnold (6) also scored well, his only defeat to Moggeridge (6) in straight sets.

Peter Loakes scored five of Colliton C’s points, plus two more in the doubles with Katherine Bundy (1), in their 27-8 loss to Wyke A. He also secured Colliton’s only win on the night in beating Roger Walden (6) 3-0.

In Division Three, Budmouth D gained revenge on Budmouth E as they registered a 25-13 derby win.

Liam Critchard (9) was the big difference between the two teams as he powered his way to three straight sets wins. Sam Melhuish (8) showed his potential playing some very fluid table tennis and Ted Paul (4) showed the benefit of playing regularly in the league.

Budmouth E held their own until halfway through the contest but only picked up two legs in the final four matches to ultimately fall away at the end.

Springfield D were treated to some highly spirited play from the Wyke C players in their 20-14 victory. Nina Moggeridge (3) showed her full range of shots and tested all of the experienced Springfield team.

Jean Baker (7) showed again what potential he holds, taking Pete Anderson (9) to four games and beating Barry Thomas (7).

Tom Hepburn (3) also displayed some superb attacking play and retrieved some unbelievable shots. The doubles secured Springfield the victory to keep them in touch with the division leaders.

Park District Y could only field two players and suffered a heavy 30-4 defeat to Wyke B.

Preston E got revenge for their 29-9 loss to compatriots Preston D in the first half of the season by securing a 26-12 win. Malcolm Smith and Paul Hammond weighed in with maximums and with Eric Chalker (5) playing they proved too strong.
