JAKE McCarthy says the Terras do not just want to throw their position away and settle for the play-offs as Weymouth ready themselves to host Merthyr Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South today (3pm).

Weymouth have had a tough run of form, but grabbed a win last weekend at Walton Casuals, which McCarthy agreed could prove to be a bit of a turning point for the Terras.

McCarthy said: “I think it could be a good turning point for us, because we were in a bit of a drought and we couldn’t really buy a win so that is hopefully going to be a turn of fortune.

“Sometimes you need a bit of luck, you need some decisions to go your way, because we had a goal at Merthyr the other day that was ruled offside when it wasn’t, you just need a couple of things to go your way.

“Hopefully we have turned the corner and can now get back on a good winning streak and hopefully finish the season strong.

“We have done all the hard work now, we don’t want to just throw it away and settle for play-offs, we want to push on and try and get automatic promotion.”

During that spell McCarthy had matches playing at centre-back due to injuries to the Weymouth defence, with Sam Sherring having been out for a month, but McCarthy feels he is better suited to midfield.

McCarthy said: “I don’t mind playing centre-back or centre-mid, but I feel I am more influential for the team playing in the middle, hopefully I can make a few things happen.

“It is always good to see Sam Sherring back, he is a very good player for us and has been up until his injury.

“It is always good to see him back and good to play in the middle for me because personally I do like playing there.”

When asked how the squad see the table situation, McCarthy felt the games in hand had been “wasted” but says anything can happen.

McCarthy said: “Obviously we have not been in the best of form recently.

“There is no beating around the bush there.

“All that matters is recently we have picked up a win and we need to keep that rolling now, we need to get a good run of wins going and see what happens come the end of the season.

“We had games in hand, we wasted those, but we have still got our chance and if we just keep on winning games like you saw with Salisbury getting a late equaliser last minute, anything can happen in this league.

“Anyone can beat anyone so if we do our job and get the three points then that is all we can do and hopefully the results will go our way, we will just have to wait and see.”

The Terras face Merthyr today, and despite a recent 2-1 loss to the Martyrs, McCarthy says they have weaknesses that Weymouth will look to take advantage of.

McCarthy said: “Like every team in this league they have got good strengths but also they have got weaknesses that we can exploit. I feel as though the game the other day was fairly even, they only really had two or three chances and they managed to score two goals.

“We couldn’t take our chances, I think we need to (stop) silly mistakes in silly areas and then we have just got to be a bit more clinical in both boxes.

“Defending a bit better and then scoring goals down the other end, hopefully that should see us over the line for the three points.”
