DORCHESTER Town winger Ben Morris spoke of his pride at opening his Magpies goalscoring account, labelling his maiden strike for his hometown club “rewarding”.

Morris, 18, came off the bench to score Dorchester’s sixth goal in a 6-1 thrashing of Staines last time out.

Morris has played most of his football this season in a dual registration tie-up with Bridport after signing with the Magpies for the entire campaign, stepping up from the Magpies’ reserves.

And the teenager felt his time at the Bees had helped his game come on despite not racking up the desired match minutes.

He told Echosport: “I’ve gone over to Bridport and really enjoyed it. They play nice football. Even there, I would want more minutes but it’s difficult for Adam (Fricker) the manager because I’m back and forth.

“It’s not really his fault, but I’ve enjoyed it out there. It’s nice to play more regular football.

“When I come back to Dorchester I just want to do the best I can whether I’m involved on the pitch, or off the pitch – just enjoy myself, that’s the main thing, and I think I have so far.

“Now it’s transitioning into men’s football.

“I’ve had to think a lot quicker than I’ve been used to. Even with the reserves you’ve got a lot more time.

“The new pitch suits me. If I came in on a bobbly pitch I’d struggle a lot more but because we’ve got a young team I can get really involved in it.”

Commenting on his home ties with the Magpies, Morris said: “It is nice, your mates are watching what you’re doing and there’s maybe a few more nerves because of that.

“But when you score a goal and do something it’s a bit more rewarding because it’s nice to see their reaction. They’re all pleased for me – moments like this are good, so hopefully there’s many more.”

Elaborating on his strike against Staines, Morris admitted he was delighted to be back among the goals having scored twice for Bridport this season.

He said: “I’m pretty pleased. It’s nice to score my first competitive goal (for Dorchester), I haven’t scored too many this season and I just want to get back on the goalscoring trail.

“It’s nice to get minutes. I was more pleased to come on the pitch and try and enjoy myself. Antonio (Diaz) just put it on a plate for me, it was harder to miss it!

“I don’t know how much I thought about it, it was there and I just hit it. It was a nice relief to go in the back of the net – a really good feeling.”
