LEWESTON School claimed two golds and a silver and became the number one ranked pistol shooting team in Great Britain, as their 12 girls roared to success in the National Schools Pistol Shooting Finals at Aylesbury.

The girls had to qualify through the regional round which was held at Leweston in October which was one of seven regional rounds from around Great Britain.

From these rounds, the top team plus the top four individuals qualified for the national finals.

The age groups were made up in school years, junior years six, seven and eight, intermediate years nine and 10, senior years 11, 12 and 13.

Leweston School had teams in every age group with more shooters taking part than any other school in the country qualifying for the national finals.

The first event of the day was the junior competition and the Leweston girls got off to a great start.

The A team of Darcy Dryden, who came fourth, Flora Spenlove-Brown, in sixth and Ginny Bruce in 13th, took team gold with a team score of 502, while the B team of Nikita Miah, Molly Colwell and Olivia Lambert took silver with a team score of 454.

Dryden qualified for the final as one of the top eight from round one and finished fifth in the individual final.

This showed great strength in depth from the junior team.

In the intermediate event, the team of Lili Amor, Lily Cunningham and Jennifer Peters finished fifth, missing bronze by 20 points.

The last event of the day saw the senior team in action with some tough opposition, but the girls did not disappoint, with the team of Lottie Trevethan, Elektra Covell and Coco Smythe taking team gold with a score of 486.

Trevethan just missed out on the final on count back, this was a good way to finish the day winning two out of three team titles and one silver. This result made Leweston School the number one ranked pistol shooting team in Great Britain.

Gorgs Geikie, 2012 Olympian (Pistol Shooting) and British Shooting Events and Commercial Coordinator, said: “The British Shooting Schools Pistol Championships has grown tremendously since the first event in October 2015 kindly hosted by Leweston School.

“The 2018-19 season saw over 600 athletes compete, representing over 270 different schools from across England, Scotland and Wales take part in the seven strong regional events.

“From these students and schools teams qualified for the national final where the championships came to a climax.

“Across all three age groups, individuals and teams representing Leweston School showed their tremendous strength in depth of talent to dominate the national final leaderboard.

“Their outstanding performances and support from their teachers and coaches really demonstrated how Leweston School are currently the top pistol shooting school in country.”

The 2019-2020 British Shooting Schools Pistol Championships begins in October, with the South West Championships returning to Leweston School for the fourth year in succession.
