PORTLAND UTD RESERVES 0

PORTLAND United Reserves fell to a heavy 7-0 defeat to title-chasing Westland Sports at the Weyline Stadium in the Dorset Premier League.

In a torrid game where the Blues were second best in every department, Portland found themselves 3-0 down at half-time and from then on there was no way back.

Callum Thompson and Henry Lawrence-Napier both notched braces, while recent signing from Chickerell Nick Voss got on the scoresheet alongside Joshua Payne and Anthony Herrin.

Blues’ manager Justin Faulkner said: “On the day we were second best in every department. To be in with a chance of getting anything we needed to be at our very best and they would need to have an off day – that didn’t happen.

“Quite the opposite, we had the worst game of this season and they have had the best display in a very, very long time according to their social media outlets.

“They are the only team to have comfortably beaten us this season and they have done that twice.”

He added: “The current amount of unavailabilities, suspensions and injuries is severely limiting what was available for me on the day and we really lacked any sort of options.

“I can’t use that as an excuse for the performance though which lacked energy, desire and determination.

“If they are allowed to play they will hurt us. They are a good team, we knew that and we still didn’t get close enough all over the pitch.

“On the positive side it was pleasing to see Sol and Manny Roche as part of the first-team matchday squad once again. We do have some promising youngsters who we feel could step up eventually.

“Any of the other players looking to follow suit will need to produce better than what we served up and this also outlines the importance of having a reserve side.”

Blues: Boore, Norman, Hankin, A Butcher, Anstey (T Butcher), Curran, Gould, Beals, Ryan, J Camp, Frost (Boatswain).
