BRENDON King says his Portland United players should want to stake a claim to being in the squad now they have a cup final to look forward to, as they return to Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division action when they travel to Fareham Town tomorrow (3pm).

The Blues came from 2-0 down to beat Horndean 3-2 on Tuesday night and book their place in the final of the Sydenhams Wessex League Cup, set to take place at AFC Portchester on Monday, May 6 (3pm).

King referred to returning to league action as ‘getting back to the bread and butter’ but praised tomorrow’s opponents the Creeksiders, who are currently 14th in the table with 40 points.

King also referenced their current run of away matches, that tomorrow will stand at eight games from their last 10 matches.

King said: “Now we get back to the bread and butter, so we go away to Fareham. I think it is our eighth game away from home out of the last 10 matches.

“They have got some really good players going forward, they have had some good results of late so it is going to be another tough game, and we will have to see what we are like numbers wise, we have still got a couple of suspensions and still got some injuries.

“We will have to see what we have got.”

Sam Buckler is available after a ban, but Ryan McKechnie is unavailable despite serving out his own suspension.
