WEYPORT captured their first-ever National League success against rivals Basing-stoke in Walsall.

With only one point to their name after five games the seasiders travelled north determined to turn their encouraging performances into positive results and despite lacking several players through injury and work commitments that is exactly what they did.

Basingstoke, runners-up in the Hampshire League, struggled to cope with Weyport's organised defence and quick counter-attacking and it was not until the third quarter that they began to fight back.

Weyport could have crumbled under the pressure but instead they stayed calm to secure all the points 16-9.

In their next game, a depleted Weyport side came up against promotion-chasing Bristol University.

With only nine fit players the seasiders slipped to a 12-9 defeat.

They then came up against Croydon in their final game and it was the Surrey side who came out on top 13-6 as fatigue began to set in.

Despite that loss, Weyport can now look forward to the next National League weekend at Crawley, which will take place on October 20-21. Their opponents there will be Newcastle, Cambridge and City of Birmingham.

With the form of Ed Stevens, who finished the weekend with 12 goals, and inspiring performances from keeper Martin Rutland and 16-year-old Niall Laming, Weyport are targeting maximum points at Crawley.
