Hampshire League Division One

WEYMOUTH 2 SALISBURY 1

SKIPPER Ben Thomas and vice-captain Matt Metcalfe led Weymouth to their first vic-tory of the season at Redlands.

After a fierce opening to the game both teams then tried to slow things down by keeping possession in a bid to frustrate their respective opponents.

But the Seasiders continued to keep their heads with debutant Sam Drewitt doing well down the left and Andy Cain rising to the challenge in the centre of the pitch by marking his man out of the game.

Their hard work laid the foundations for some quick counter-attacks and late in the first half the deadlock was finally broken by Metcalfe.

The hard-running forward latched on to the ball on the 25-yard line. He then skipped past a couple of opponents before firing a fine shot into the back of the net.

The hosts looked like they were beginning to take full control of the game but a momentary lapse in concentration allowed Salisbury to get back on level terms through a swift break that exposed their opponents' defence.

To their credit Weymouth immediately regained their shape and thanks to good defensive play by Dan Eggleston, Damien Barry and Dan Bowles the visitors could find no way through to grab their second.

The winning strike then arrived after some more brilliance by Metcalfe who put Thomas through. The captain took his time before lashing a shot that gave the keeper no chance.

Thomas said: "A win is a win, it doesn't really matter how they come, and that was a good three points."

Weymouth travel to Blandford today where they will be hoping to gain their second win of the campaign.
