MARK Molesley says his side have to take matters into their own hands, after a 1-1 draw at Poole Town saw their lead at the top of the Evo-Stik Southern Premier South table cut to just one point.

At one stage, it seemed the title belonged to the Terras, with Weymouth drawing against Poole and Merthyr beating Taunton Town, a set of results that would have seen Molesley’s men crowned champions.

However, the stalemate at Poole persisted, and Taunton came back to beat Merthyr 3-2 to set up a grandstand finale on the final day of the season on Saturday.

Molesley said: “We are obviously disappointed, it is the trials and tribulations of football really, isn’t it.

“At one stage I think it was all going OK and things change, but look, we have got to take matters into our own hands, we have got to try and look after ourselves and we have not managed to get the wins over the line in the last few games.”

Weymouth started brilliantly, with Calvin Brooks scoring after 15 seconds, before Corby Moore cracked an effort in from the edge of the box.

Molesley said: “I thought we started well and then we went a little bit shaky and not quite functioning the way we should have been in that first half.

“In the second half I thought we came out and looked a bit more like ourselves, the effort and endeavour.

“It’s always hard Saturdays, Mondays, it is a big ask for the boys to play games that are so close together.

“But we battled hard and we pushed hard and we could not quite get it over the line, but we are still top of the league and we have still got one more bite of the cherry so if we do not get it over the line then we do not deserve it, we will not deserve to win the title.

“You want to be a champion you have got to go out and prove it, do it when the pressure is on.”

Molesley says he will give players a rest after two games in three days, with the next session on Thursday.

“We will be resting the boys down this week before getting them in on Thursday, and then getting ready for another massive game for the football club.”

It was a very dramatic second half, with the goals at Taunton being very audibly reflected in the noise from the Terras’ fans, making the result in Somerset unmistakable.

When asked how it was managing the energy of his squad bearing that in mind, Molesley replied: “It is all part of the drama.

“Everyone is getting excited and you cannot help but get drawn into it a little bit when you hear that they (Merthyr Town) are winning 2-0 and then all of a sudden the draw is a good result for us, it gets us the title. Football changes quickly.

“But we have just got to remain focused on what we are trying to do and win a football game.

“Maybe the scoreline meant the draw was enough and you manage the game a bit differently.

“It wasn’t to be, it was not our day.

“We are going to be working as hard as we can to make sure it is on Saturday.”
