COACH Justin Holbrook had plenty to reflect on after a bumper Easter weekend when the Star’s Mike Critchley caught up with him.

MC: Monday was the first time you have really had to make significant changes to team, you must be pleased with the response?

JH: Credit to the players for that. It was great to give Joe Batchelor his first game and it was a good day for him.

For Swifty, he has been injured for the first part of this year and only had the one game at Leigh. For him to come in and get a hat-trick was great for him.

Jack Welsby got another taste of Super League so there were plenty of good signs from the guys who came in at the weekend.

St Helens Star:

MC: For someone like Adam Swift on the sidelines seeing a real superstar in the making on one wing and Golden Boot on the other, he has kept his head up and worked hard.

JH: He is such a popular guy and good to have around your squad and it is pleasing when you see how hard they work, especially when they are injured and he knows there are guys in front of him that he can’t do anything about it because he can’t get on the pitch.

He played well at Leigh, so for him to get a chance here and then score three tries was great for him.

St Helens Star:

MC: You must be delighted with where the club sit after Easter and everyone has now been played?

JH: We are really happy with where we are sitting and the way we have gone about the wins.

We have been in control of most games and the key decision makers have been taking the right options in putting us in a good position. Everyone is playing well and it is fantastic.

Look at Matty Lees, who played 70 minutes on Monday after backing up from Friday – playing big minutes in those conditions.

For a front rower to be able to do that is phenomenal for us.

He runs hard and is getting a lot smarter this year with the way he plays and his discipline has improved out of sight. He is a great young player to work with.

St Helens Star:

MC: Another Sunday game – sun out, team playing well – it gives the club an opportunity to reach out to maybe newer, and younger, breed of fan.

JH: Sunday afternoon rugby league is fantastic for everybody and gives people a place to go in our town.

It is a perfect timeslot for kids – we don’t play a lot of afternoons at all so hopefully we can get a good crowd on Sunday.

MC: A couple more Super League games and then it is the Challenge Cup. Will this affect how you go about things?

JH: We have Huddersfield away in the cup and we will get on with that and deal with it. You can always hope to get a non-Super League side, but it is the luck of the draw.

We will have a normal seven-day build up for that, but it is different and we will treat it differently.

We need to play the same, but acknowledge that this is different and make sure we are ready to play that game.

MC: If the injuries continue to stack up, will you be recalling Luke Douglas from Leigh.

JH: He does not have to stay at Leigh, he is on a week-to-week.

Duggy is a fantastic player who is going well for Leigh every week, so we will see how he goes.

But obviously we had Jack Ashworth and Kyle Amor who both played terrific against Hull.

Starting slowly at 10-0, and losing Tommo, Jack came on and gave us that impact that we have been looking for this year and knowing what he is capable of.

He has been itching to get back in the side and did a great job, as did Kyle in the second half.

St Helens Star:

MC: It is a blow losing Morgan Knowles for a match, how did you see the incident?

JH: There was no malice in the challenge, but Morgs tried to flip him over but he only got his arm, not his whole body so will miss a game.
