PORTLAND ace Jay Lelliott took bronze in the 200m backstroke at the British Swimming Championships in Glasgow.

Lelliott, 24, missed out on silver in his preferred 400m freestyle by 0.14 seconds, finishing fourth, but made amends when picking up joint-third in 1:59.64 with Millfield’s Brodie Williams in a discipline not renowned as his best.

Lelliott’s bronze salvaged some success from a regatta at which he was a double defending champion after sealing gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle in 2018.

Electing to bypass the 800m free in 2019, Lelliott came through the 200m butterfly heats in second place with 2:00.29 before finishing fifth in the final, bettering his time by 0.37 seconds.

Lelliott also turned his attentions to the 200m freestyle but after being drawn in heat seven failed to progress among a strong field, claiming fifth in 1:50.27.

It was only until the final session of the meet that Lelliott won a medal, gaining 0.43s on Williams in the final 50m to share bronze in a thrilling finish.
