BRIDPORT entertained London touring side Wandsworthians for the final friendly fixture of what has been a very hard season, rounding off their campaign with a 50-0 victory.

Unleashed from the pressure of league rugby and supported by a near full contingent of available players, including many new generation young colts coming through to the senior side, the Blues provided an entertaining running rugby game.

Admittedly, playing a touring side that were well oiled for the game by the amber nectar from the night before and a ‘courtroom trial’ pre-match drinks fine for not meeting touring rules, Bridport ran in eight tries without response.

However Wandsworthians provided a strong opposition and both sides played the game in admirable spirit leaving little for club referee Louis Browne to have to control.

Bridport bossed most of the possession from a strong set of forwards and the threes took every opportunity to run the ball wide.

It was pleasing for Bridport to have many young colts stepping up including Alex Phillips joining his brother Seb in the side, which gave the club an insight into a better future.

Tries came from returning players including Ricky Stubbs, Lloyd Vercoe and Rory Greening, with regular players Mitch Waters, Steve Tuck and Harry Richardson adding to the scores, leaving a taste of things to come if all turning out on Saturday were regularly available to play next season.

A very enjoyable game was completed with entertainment after the game involving the visitors that made a great end to the season.

Meanwhile, Bridport’s under-13s recorded a fabulous victory in beating Melksham 6-4 on tries.

Bridport’s junior presentation is tomorrow, followed a week later by the annual dinner. The Blues’ AGM is on Thursday, May 23.
