YEOVIL LADIES 0

BIRMINGHAM CITY WOMEN 2

YEOVIL Town Ladies saw their season end in a 2-0 defeat, with a Charlie Wellings brace doing the damage in their FA Women’s Super League season-ender at the Clayson Stadium.

For the home side there was little riding on it, with the Glovers having long been relegated.

In the early stages Yeovil looked well-matched for their opponents, with lots of early forays forward, the best ending with a lofted ball from Georgia Evans straight at Hannah Hampton in the Birmingham goal.

Yeovil went close to conceding after nine minutes. A foul close to the penalty box resulted in a dangerous free-kick for the visitors, but Sarah Mayling headed too close to Yeovil goalkeeper Megan Walsh, who made the save.

Olivia Fergusson then managed to dribble through the defence, however, a late block prevented her getting a shot off.

Wellings then got down the right hand side for Birmingham but Walsh saved and gathered at the second attempt.

The pattern of play continued for most of the first half, with Yeovil on the backfoot but rarely being completely dominated by Birmingham.

Ellen White then raced through but put her shot over the bar as Yeovil continued to hold Birmingham heading into the latter part of the half.

Bonnie Horwood then had to be alert to take the ball off the feet of Claudia Walker, who was in front of goal and seemingly about to fire in.

Birmingham came out with their hopes of third place dented by Chelsea taking the lead at Reading and Walker missed a near-open goal, putting it wide of the far post.

Yet Charlie Wellings soon put Birmingham ahead in the 58th minute, with a lovely strike from the corner of the box.

Six minutes later, Birmingham had another goal, when Wellings’ cross took a touch off Ellie Mason that fooled Walsh and speared into the net.

Fergusson had a late chance, clipping a shot wide of the far post, but the Glovers were unable to grab a consolation.

At the death Walsh leapt well to deny Wellings a hat-trick, as the match finished 2-0.
