CRANBORNE 102ao (6pts) CHARLTON DOWN 16-1 (10pts) - abandoned

A BRILLIANT bowling and fielding performance by Charlton Down, and a possible win, was spoiled by torrential rain, with the County Division Two match being abandoned after only four overs of the Charlton innings.

Charlton Down started brilliantly with the Stevens brothers Matt (3-20) and Dan (3-21) bowling with great control and accuracy and at times were unplayable.

Dan struck first, bowling Ollie Hand with the score on 7-1 before Matt bowled San Jeewa Lankage for a duck with the score at 8-2.

This soon became 14-3 when Dan bowled Phil Park with a beautiful away swing ball.

It was Matt who struck twice in as many balls to leave Cranborne struggling on 27-5.

Jude Gwennap, a 15-year-old debutant, caught a good low catch at silly mid off and Jack Eveleigh snaffled a spinning catch at gully.

Dan Stevens accounted for Tom Pickering for 13, when Jae Miller caught an outstanding catch behind the stumps diving one handed to leave Cranborne in desperate trouble on 33-6.

It was Kean Gorgirzadeh (34) and David Dawkins (13) who added 29 valuable runs before James Pretty (3-26) struck twice with Kieran Heath catching a very difficult skier at mid-on and Kim Park juggling a slip catch.

Kim Park came on to remove the dangerous Gorgirzadeh for 34 and Pretty closed the innings with Eveleigh taking a regulation catch at gully, bowling out Cranborne for 102 in only the 34th over.

Charlton Down’s innings started under dark clouds which soon emptied on the players and the ground.

There was time for Eveleigh to gloriously straight drive Phil Park to the boundary off the first ball but with 16 on the board, the players dashed for cover. Common sense then prevailed and the game was abandoned without another ball being bowled.

Captain Tommy Tucker said: “After such a good fielding and bowling performance the reward of a win would have been deserved and it is a shame the weather spoilt the afternoon.

“But it was great to see three 15-year-olds bowl and field so well in the form of Lewis Harrington, Heath and Gwennap.”
