WEYMOUTH Wildcats saw their Midland and Southern Development League meeting with Birmingham Bulls postponed after a nasty crash involving Edinburgh Monarchs’ rider Josh Pickering.

Competing in the Championship League, Pickering lost control at the first turn during heat 15 and needed extended medical treatment.

With the race curfew set at 10pm, the meeting was abandoned with the Bulls and Wildcats scheduled to race after the main event.

Pickering was discharged from hospital the following morning with shoulder ligament damage and a sore head. Birmingham Brummies won 48-36.

Weymouth and Birmingham had been set to create league history with the contest featuring two female racers for the first time in Bulls’ captain Rachel Hellowell and the Wildcats’ Cesca Kirtley-Paine.

The clash is yet to be given a rescheduled date.

Speaking to Echosport, Peters, who had made the long trip to the Midlands in vain, admitted it soon became apparent the Wildcats would see no action after Pickering’s injury.

He said: “It was quite a bad accident. He just came out of the first corner, after the back straight.

“I’m not quite sure what happened, he went down and it was a bad crash, he wasn’t moving.

“It was enough to call out the county ambulance. They have an ambulance there but call out a big one if it’s more serious.

“They had to wait for that to arrive and they didn’t want to move him. Once that happened you just knew it wasn’t going to happen.

“They’ve got a curfew for 10 o’clock up there, so we all started packing up and headed on.”

Weymouth next visit Reading Racers in league action on Monday.
