MOONFLEET 2000 Indoor Bowls Club hosted its 19th presentation evening with numerous trophies handed out to celebrate winners and runners-up in the winter competitions and leagues.

After a warm welcome from the new president, Helen Monelle, 80 members sat down to enjoy a two-course meal.

The club sets out to encourage youngsters to play on a Saturday morning and, as they gain in confidence, they begin to enter competitions both at home and further afield.

This year the generation pairs competition, where a junior is teamed up with an adult, was won by Jacob Watson and Derek Spicer with runners-up Joseph Aslett and Derrick Taylor. Jodie Phillips claimed the Jim Hamilton Trophy for the most improved junior.

There was a splendid response to the novice competitions this year, both in the drawn triples and singles with winners Erika Fry, Di Carteur and Marty Groves in the triples and Andy Boatswain in the singles.

The club hope that many of the entrants here will take part in the main competitions next year.

In the main club competitions there was a record number of entries, with plenty of debutants.

Individual successes went this year to Eileen Devonald-Batt for the ladies’ veteran singles and also a member of the winning ladies’ drawn triples team, Tim Munro men’s veteran singles, Anne Chislett ladies’ club singles champion and also a member of the winning mixed triples team and Jamie Watkiss men’s club singles champion and also a member of the men’s triples team.

In all there were more than 60 competition winners and runners-up, all of whom added to the splendid occasion as did those attending to receive shields and prizes for success in the winter leagues.

The final presentation of the evening is always traditionally the president’s appreciation cup.

This year outgoing president Phil Lock chose Malcolm Smith to receive this trophy for all his hard work for the club, both on and off the green, in particular for managing the club’s website and being a major player in developing the online booking system.
