DORCHESTER Amateur Boxing Club’s fighters produced solid displays at a sold-out Arena ABC fight night at Winton Working Men’s Club.

A total of 18 bouts took place, with three Dorchester fighters contesting two skills fights and one bout.

Dorchester’s rising talent Billy J Dean fought Arena superstar Ben Charmen in a skills bout and before the first bell stopped ringing Dean and Charmen got straight into a furiously competitive battle and the boxers showed skills and motivation befitting far more experienced professionals.

This fight was turning into a real thriller with both fighters dodging, counter punching, using excellent footwork and showing the ability to parry punches.

The referee thought Dean would have taken the win had it been a real bout.

Dorchester’s Billy Winch contested the evening’s third bout against Arena’s Alex Mancuso in another skills contest for the novice boxers.

Winch took the bout to Mancuso and looked in top form early on.

Mancuso menacingly stalked Billy, but then flitted back and got himself pinned onto the ropes. His corner ordered him to box and he duly obeyed and opened up as he began to mean business, although Winch prevented him from reaching proper boxing mode.

Mancuso could never vary his line of attack with Winch in his face at all times.

Winch jolted lefts and rights at the start of the third, but this time Mancuso slammed in some heavy shots but Winch dodged them.

Mancuso proved that he was a slow starter and really came to life in the latter stages but both boxers were pleased with their work.

Dorchester’s Maryanne Cooper-Mills then fought against Leah Carter from Parkstone, who had the advantage of two adult matches under her belt.

Cooper-Mills started well with a real gritty confidence, turning Carter with a clubbing left hook to the shoulder pushing her on to the ropes.

Carter frantically lashed out with a desperate low survival punch catching Cooper-Mills off guard in a crumple leaving herself unprotected.

Carter then landed the loudest cracking head shot of the contest, prompting the referee to jump in and save the Dorchester fighter from further punishment.

Cooper-Mills has now been being a 30-day layoff for safety reasons.

Winch and Dean gave their condolences to Cooper-Mills, the duo adding: “We both admire you very much, we all want you back.”

Dorchester ABC offered their thanks to all the officials, staff and Steve Clark – host of the show.
