WEYMOUTH Cricket Club chairman Cube Whyte admits the Seasiders will be in financial trouble should they fail to secure a major sponsor for next season.

Weymouth currently have JD Wetherspoon emblazoned on their matchday shirt, continuing a long-running association between the two parties.

However, a change in management has led to a reassessment of that deal, with the pub chain pulling out of the relationship after 2019.

The Seasiders must now make up the shortfall in cash as costs for matchday umpires, match balls, pitch preparation and teas all mount up.

Whyte told Echosport: “We’ve had long-term sponsors in Wetherspoon who have been great sponsors for a couple of years now.

“There’s been a change in management in one of the pubs and they decided not to continue sponsoring us, but we’ve got to thank them for their sponsorship.

“The manager at the Swan was kind enough to donate some money this year.

“At the moment, we’ll be looking for a new major sponsor for next year. In the meantime we’ve managed to keep Wetherspoon on the shirts.”

Whyte added that any sponsorship, no matter how little, would be appreciated.

He said: “We’re looking for sponsors for all levels – for balls, teas and all those things.

“The costs are increasing and we’re trying not to increase the costs to players. It’s starting to make it pretty hard.

“As a club we had a race night fundraiser which was a great success but it would be great to get sponsorship from outside – even a £50 sponsorship per home game for teas.

“We only had a little bit in the coffers to see us through this season.”
