SAILING enthusiasts participated in the first of seven free dinghy sail training afternoons being offered to all Castle Cove Sailing Club members.
The overall course known in the club as Sail4all has been loosely structured around the RYA Level 2 syllabus.
The turnout for this first session was good, with 15 dinghies of many different types and 23 sailors ages ranging from six to over 70.
The overall objective of the course is to develop the basic skills required to sail independently.
Sail4all trainer, Andy Eastaugh, believes the session was an overall success despite regular use of the safety boats.
He said: “Last Saturday the wind was slightly higher than predicted, so there were a few nerves at first, though confidence grew markedly as the session progressed.
“Most successfully completed was the coming-alongside manoeuvre, demonstrating good boat skill.
“There were several capsizes and some gear failures which kept the safety boats busy.
“The session went well overall, auguring well for the rest of the programme.”
Also, last weekend, there was a charity quiz night to launch Tikka’s Sailing Challenge 2019 in aid of Action for Children.
Steve Pointon and crew have started from Portland Harbour with the objective of circumnavigating Britain.
Castle Cove Sailing Club have donated to this cause and had two teams at the quiz night.
