DORCHESTER Town midfielder Charlie Davis confessed the combination of boss Callum Brooks and a Magpies return was too good to refuse.

Davis, who last season had spells at Weymouth, Poole and Gosport Borough – eventually captaining the latter – is one of 16 players to have agreed terms to play at the Clayson Stadium next season.

The free-kick specialist also revealed he had known Brooks through being coached by his father Shaun while at Bournemouth.

He told Echosport: “I’ve known Callum for probably 10 years now, his father was my manager at Bournemouth.

“I know what he’s like as a coach so as soon as I found out (Dorchester) were interested it was definitely a conversation I wanted to have.

“Being at Dorchester before, I know how well the club’s run and how they look after their players which isn’t always the case in non-League.

“Gosport last year was a good sense of achievement to stay up but I needed something a bit more local with work – it wasn’t feasible to stay there.

“I always knew I’d probably be leaving at the end of the year. I sat down and spoke to Cal and from the first conversation we both left saying it was something we wanted to get sorted.

“Then you’ve got all the nitty gritty bits of him speaking to the board but Matt Lucas (chairman) and everyone involved was keen, which was nice.

“For the manager and people that know me at the club to be so keen for me to come back was really welcoming, and we got it done really quickly, which was nice.”

Commenting on Brooks’ managerial style, Davis spoke highly of his future boss.

“He’s got great attention to detail. In non-League, that’s few and far between. Not everyone seems too worried about developing players and getting the best out of them,” he said.

“It’s a results-based industry, of course, but he’s niche in terms of getting the best out of his players and understanding how they are as a player and person.

“When you’re not training every single day and you’ve got commitments such as work, someone who you know understands you outside of football as well as your abilities in football was a massive pull for me.

“He’s a top bloke as well. You can talk to him about football for hours but anything you talk to him about he has a genuine interest in what you want to speak about.

“I couldn’t speak highly enough about Cal and the way he dealt with our first conversation in the off season.

“It was a no-brainer for me to work with him again at a really well-run club.”
