DORCHESTER Town midfielder Sam Lanahan is savouring the competition for places in the middle third among the Magpies’ squad.

Lanahan is one of five central midfielders to have agreed terms with the club for next season alongside Billy Lowes, Luke Winsper, Charlie Davis and Sean Wright.

Having scored nine goals in 29 games to become the club’s top scorer in the 2017/18 campaign, Lanahan joined Gosport Borough where he played with Davis.

The duo have since switched back to Dorchester, with Lanahan stationed for his third stint at the Clayson Stadium and Davis preparing for his second.

Speaking to Echosport, Lanahan insists the plethora of midfield options available to boss Callum Brooks is a positive.

“That’s obviously what any manager wants, they want people to play for their places,” he said.

“I suppose it’s only healthy for the club. Hopefully, whatever happens, we’re in a good position going forward at the end of the season.

“That’s the main aim from Callum’s perspective and it is for me, really. I’d like to see the club do well and hopefully perform week in, week out for them – that’s my aim.

“From his perspective, that’s probably why he’s got more than enough midfielders. It only takes a couple of injuries and all of a sudden we’re light.”

Lanahan also referenced Brooks as one of his main attractions to Dorchester.

He said: “I haven’t worked with him before but people have spoken highly of him.

“I wouldn’t say it’s the main pull because I’ve been at the club before and I like the place as a whole, the fans are great, the people in and around the club from Del (Taylor, kitman) all the way to people behind the bar.

“They’re all really nice people and you go in the bar after having a chat. I just get that feel that you like the club.

“That was a pull, I’ve been there before, Trev (Senior, assistant-manager) is there, hopefully Nathan Walker will be there as well, so that had an impact.

“I played with Charlie last year so there’s a few things really – everything was pointing in that direction. I know all the players from before, so it was just a good move for me.”
