SHERBORNE TOWN 1

BRIDPORT went down to a 1-0 loss in their opening pre-season game against Sherborne Town as Aaron White’s first-half strike proved the difference between the two sides at St Mary’s Field.

In boss Rich Robson’s first game at the Bees’ helm Bridport acquitted themselves well but were undone at a set-piece for the winner – a particular source of frustration for Robson.

With the vast majority of Bridport’s players having never played together, the Bees struggled to create chances. New signing Callum Thompson was the brightest spark, swinging in a couple of menacing deliveries just out of reach of a teammate.

Robson was nevertheless pleased with the workout, telling Echosport: “It was a tight affair all the way through. Considering the squad we had – I don’t think we’ve worked with a lot of players who were there – to only lose 1-0 against a side which seems to have some quite well established players wasn’t too bad.

“There were glimmers in there of what we wanted to see but still very far from the finished article.

“What we did get from it is some good fitness and playing time for people like Callum, Dec Cornish and Lewis Clarke got a good 85 minutes.”

Bridport next entertain Portland United at St Mary’s Field tomorrow (7.45pm).

*Bridport announced the signing of Will Gape prior to kick-off.
