WEYMOUTH boss Mark Molesley highlighted the “unforgiving” nature of the Vanarama National League South ahead of Chelmsford City’s visit to the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow (3pm).

City have the unwanted record of a failed promotion bid via the play-offs in each of the last three seasons.

The Clarets lost 2-1 to Ebbsfleet in the 2015/16 play-off final and suffered semi-final woe against Hampton & Richmond and Welling in respective 1-0 and 3-2 defeats thereafter.

Weymouth’s clash with the Essex outfit comes after a challenging start which included a magnificent 2-1 win away to Maidstone United and a 1-1 draw with Bath City – play-off losers in 2018/19 themselves.

Speaking to Echosport, Molesley admitted securing four points in two games had been a “good start”.

He said: “It’s been a good start for us so far but the games come thick and fast and Chelmsford are another team who have been in the play-offs the last few years.

“They’re an experienced team with good players but every team in the league’s going to throw up a tough challenge for us.

“This is the nature of this league – it’s unforgiving, relentless. When you’re part of it you’ve got to strive to improve and keep learning.”

Commenting on the tough opening, Molesley said: “We’ll look at each game in isolation.

“It was a tough start on paper but every game’s going to be tough. This is what we’re in this league for, what we worked so hard for.

“We want to pit our wits against the good clubs. The club’s been missing this sort of football for a while – we’re determined to enjoy it.

“At home we always back ourselves and we go into every game looking to win it. We’re not rolling over, we’re always trying to score more goals and never go on our backfoot.”

Weymouth have previous with City in Molesley’s reign, having lost 2-1 to the Clarets in the FA Cup third qualifying round in 2017 with Harry Baker grabbing a late consolation.

Weymouth have no fresh injury concerns ahead of the fixture.
