THE sun has set on this season’s Read Woodruff Dorchester & District Evening League season.

St George’s comfortably retained their title and will no doubt be keen to repeat their hat-trick of five years ago when games restart next April.

They did, however, have to relinquish their Doug Read Cup to Martinstown.

Cattistock improved to reach the runner-up position and Dewlish did well on their return to the top division.

Bere Regis suffered from the loss of several players from last year and struggled throughout – they will hope the experience given to their players will see them perform well in Division Two, as has happened with Plush.

Dorchester Casuals stormed straight through the second division, gaining successive promotions.

Hazelbury Bryan went close to top spot again, but Charlton Down’s results were not quite as good as last season.

Cosmos finished in the relegation spot, having suffered several close defeats and then at last pulling off a victory in their final game as just reward for their continuing efforts.

Division Three saw the closest battle for top spot, with Frampton striving hard for an immediate return to Division Two.

In the end, however, they were pipped by Puddletown Reserves, who added the title and promotion to their run to the Doug Read Cup semi-final.

New Look’s first season did not prove successful in terms of results, but it is hoped that the players they have introduced will continue to play in the good spirit that has been shown throughout our leagues.

In the runscoring charts, Puddletown’s Michael Crabb was the league’s top batsman, amassing 581 runs at an average of 36.31 as his side finished runners-up in the Doug Read Cup.

Crabb’s 11 catches also saw his take top fielding honours.

Meanwhile, clubmate James Morris claimed a haul of 21 scalps for Puddletown Reserves to take top place in the wicket-taking department.

Congratulations are due to all who participated – as players, as umpires, as scorers, as groundstaff, as team organisers and/or parents and drivers or as spectators.

Thanks also to the league committee and perhaps a special thanks to Tom Blundell for organising independent umpires for every game, even those rearranged because of the weather.

We look forward to welcoming all again next year and to our trophy presentation evening in the autumn.
