WEYMOUTH Golf Club trio Audrey Garnett, Dilys Grant and Pam Lee took victory in a Bowmaker competition as ladies’ captain Sue Stroudley held her captain’s day.

A field of 41 ladies took part in a shotgun start on holes one to nine with the theme of the day being county champions where participants wore clothing relating to the county or country of their birth.

As the teams started making their way to their designated first tee the heavens opened.

However, after this deluge the day brightened and a perfect day of golf ensued.

Players were given a choice of six clubs from a list and then asked to throw a dice to decide their club option.

Garnett, Grant and Lee beat team Carol Freeman, Pat Ray and Gill Corben into second while the third-best team comprised of Val Parsons, Sue Baker and Marian Huckle.

Best outfit went to Denise Duce, while silver nearest the pin (10) was won by Audrey Garnett and the bronze nearest the pin (5) went to Caroline Tapster.

The halfway house was very ably manned by Malcolm Stroudley and Mike Rand with the post-match tea being a cream tea which was thoroughly enjoyed by all on the day plus lady members unable to play on the day being invited.

The combined Cresta Cup and EG Medal saw Division One’s Sally Davis (69) beat Carol Freeman (79) and Sue Stroudley (80) to take overall honours. In Division Two, Kay Thomas (70) led home Jo Booth (74) and Pam Lee (75).

In Division Three, Di Timms (71) beat Laura Webb (74) and Ruth Bray (79).

Meanwhile, Weymouth and all golf clubs that participate in the Women’s England Golf Trust National Pairs competition, played a Stableford at their home club.

In total 123 clubs played their home competitions.

The highest scores in Division One (0-20) and Division Two (21-36) are added together and are sent to the governing body.

Weymouth having a score of 75 was represented by Sharon Rand (silver) and Sandy Lane (bronze), there was a total of 32 pairings playing in this competition.

To reach the National Finals, being held at Kings Norton Golf Club, the total score of 74 and above had to be achieved this year.

The competition of the day was a four-ball betterball and the pair finished in the middle of the field.

Weymouth was the only club to be representing the south-west area.

The purpose of this competition is to raise funds to support young golfers of any level who, without some financial support, would not be able to continue playing the game.
