FOLLOWING the success of last weekend’s win on the road, Dorchester’s first XV were foiled in their plans for their first home win of the season with Lytchett Minster being unable to field a team.

However, the A XV, ably led by Matt Fry, travelled to Wheatsheaf Cabin Boys in the Wadworth 6X Dorset & Wilts Two South, where they returned with the maximum points haul after winning 55-3.

The team followed the pre-set game plan straight from the training pitch, this created holes in the Wheatsheaf defence and ultimately led to success.

Kieran Mayall provided the team with some good running lines from centre whilst Charlie Sharpe reacted fastest to a spoiled line out drive, giving Dorchester their first points of the afternoon.

Scott Rice had a good day with his throwing into the line-out and Jamie Jackson provided good control in the pack.

Dorchester’s pack proved too strong for the opposition and worked superbly well all game.

However, the team did struggle with a high penalty count losing them some field position and they needed a half-time defensive rethink to reduce the conceding of penalties.

In all, Dorchester scored nine tries of which five were converted, James McKendry coming away with a personal haul of four tries and two conversions.

A XV manager Laurence Burch said of McKendry: “James ran the show and was unplayable.”

Needless to say he was Dorchester’s man of the match.

Captain Matt Fry said after the match: “I was really proud of the guys for a great performance against a team that pushed us hard twice last season.

“Laurence and I were especially pleased with the way the whole team implemented the new style of play brought in by our new head coach.

“This win has set us up perfectly for big physical clash with Bridport this week.”

Dorchester’s third XV Gladiators had a changed fixture, playing a friendly against a newly-formed Christchurch side in only their third ever game.

Dorchester’s Jamie Morgan opened the scoring within five minutes of the kick-off in a fast-paced game.

The Gladiators’ pack had the beating of their opposition and provided quick clean ball for scrum-halves Dave Clarke and Toby Graves to unleash their quick back line.

Both sides were determined to keep the pace up in very warm conditions, among Dorchester’s scorers were Leo Ansell, Jamie Lamb-Fister and the returning Joe Prior kicking a storm in the front row with a welcome guest appearance.

Christchurch battled admirably all game, not giving up, and eventually going over the line in the final 10 minutes.

While the wining scoreline may have flattered an experienced Gladiators side with six different try scorers, the others being Pat Nelson and Charlie Davies, captain Tony O’Connell said that his team knew they were in a tough game against some very new players willing to give their all.
