TWO goals by midfielder Ross Doidge helped Portland stay at the top of their group in the Dorset Premier League Cup.

The Blues dominated the clash and should have scored more but winning boss Dave Kiteley reckons people should not read too much into the result.

He said: "I said earlier in the week that I had heard the wheels had come off at Poole Borough and for some reason a lot of their first team went with their reserves today.

"I do not know why that was but we can only play what is in front of us and we went there and did the job we wanted to do.

"We have got Poole again in the league next week and I have no doubt that will be a totally different affair."

The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes when a fine through ball by former Dorchester Town defender Michael Walker found Doidge, who had made a great run from deep.

The talented playmaker took the ball on his chest and then fired a powerful shot across the keeper.

United continued to dominate and should have added to their tally before the break but Lewis Whyton, Adam Linaker and Ross Carmichael all missed good chances.

Matt White replaced Whyton on 60 minutes and he made an instant impact by grabbing his side's second with a great header.

The result was then put beyond all doubt when fellow substitute Callum Ross-Jennins was tripped in the box allowing Doidge to complete his brace.

Kiteley said: "We dominated the game from start to finish but again we lacked conviction in front of goal.

"To be honest the game should have been over by half-time but then Matt came on and took his chance and from then on there was no doubt that we would go on and win.

"I don't think our keeper Paul Gadsby had a save to make and although we should be taking more of our chances, we have kept four clean sheets in our last five games are looking solid."

Portland's next Dorset Premier Cup clash will be against Wincanton Town at the end of next month.

Blues: Gadsby, Percy, Clarke, Perkins, Walker, Litherland, Carmichael, Doidge, Whyton (White 60), Linaker (Halloran 70), Lamb (Ross-Jennins 70).
