WIMBORNE TOWN 0

DORCHESTER TOWN 1

STRIKER River Smith notched his first Dorchester Town goal as the Magpies progressed to the Southern League Challenge Cup second round at the expense of luckless Wimborne Town.

Dorchester made six changes to the side that started Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Swindon Supermarine as Shane Murphy, Antonio Diaz, Sean Wright and Ben Morris came in alongside Ashley Wells, who signed dual forms from Weymouth prior to kick-off, and fellow new signing defensive midfielder Ben Rowthorn.

Wimborne crashed shots against the woodwork three times in the opening stages, Joe Byrne’s header the closest of the trio.

Smith fired wide midway through the half before the former Hamworthy striker buried his maiden Magpies’ goal after Jason Brookes saw his shot parried by goalkeeper Cameron Plain.

After the break, Morris tested Plain after good link-up play with Smith as Dorchester searched for a second.

Amid a flurry of substitutions, Wimborne hit the upright for a fourth time prior to Murphy saving superbly with his legs.

With the match petering out, Dorchester were able to advance after keeping a third clean sheet in 12 games this season.
