WEYMOUTH maintained their unbeaten record in the National League Division Two with their second 3-0 win, this time over MK City.

Weymouth were without two key players in Liam Tewkesbury and Mike Powell but it did not seem to affect the team as they got off to a flying start racing to a 12-3 lead in the first set with excellent outside-hitting from Valdis Baranovs and Tom Allen.

The Seasiders were able to maintain this advantage throughout the set to run out 25-16 victors.

The second set was much tighter with MK City serving strongly and putting pressure on the Weymouth service receive but stronger middle-hitting from Sam Groom and Darren Harding meant that Weymouth just had the edge, running out 25-21 winners.

MK City started the third set powerfully and it looked like the match would go to a fourth set as MK City ran away to a 16-3 lead but a great fightback led by excellent setting from Ryan Stout and a much improved service receive, inspired by libero Elliott Sawyer, meant that Weymouth made a fantastic fightback to take the set and match 25-22.

Now the attention turns to this Saturday when Weymouth take on the national champions Polonia from London in the second round of the National Cup.

Polonia are widely regarded as the best side English volleyball has ever produced and their next match after playing at Redlands on Saturday will be at the Copperbox in London when they play in the European Champions League against Maldost Zagreb from Croatia.

The Weymouth team are looking forward to the experience of playing against such strong

opponents and are hoping they will be able to learn from the experience.

Captain Ryan Stout said: “We are all looking forward to this opportunity to play against such a fantastic team and will be training particularly hard this week with the aim of pushing them as far as we can, its going to be a great learning experience for our young players.”

This is probably the biggest indoor match in Weymouth for 25 years and starts at Redlands Sports Centre at 1.30pm.

The team are hoping a big crowd will cheer them on and entry is free.
