WEYMOUTH LADIES 3

KNOWLE 0

WEYMOUTH Ladies remain at the top of East Division after another solid performance earned them victory over Knowle.

It was the first time these teams have ever met in any league competition.

The game promised goals and excitement based on Weymouth’s opening two games.

With the weather of wind and rain set in for the match, the hosts started strongly.

A great, solid defensive performance from Weymouth’s back four saw Knowle unable to penetrate early on.

Lynsey Melhuish and Jenna Bennett showed great speed and skill at the back to stop the majority of Knowle attacks down the left, and Emma Thomas and Jo Brazier provided crucial stops and strength in the middle.

Weymouth’s attack was strong and fast and played some wonderful hockey down the right-hand side with the help of Emily Austin and player of the match Susie Stone, linking up well with Jodie Stone in the middle who again played a key role in distributing the ball to the forwards.

The forward attack of Sophie Russell, Katy Stone, Hannah Venner and Jemma Brunnell saw wave after wave of attacks.

A solid performance from the opposition goalkeeper saw many chances denied.

Eventually, Weymouth broke through with some clever and patient play and went into half-time 2-0 ahead thanks to goals from Katy Stone and Amanda Harvey.

The interval saw the team talk focus on shape and composure, and that is exactly what they did in the second half.

Knowle were determined to keep Weymouth out of the D and made a few breaks for goal.

Goalkeeper Megan Eadon making a crucial stop after a one-on-one from a charging Knowle forward, making it two out of three games with a clean sheet.

A third goal for Weymouth came from Brunnell.

It was a draining and tough game, but Weymouth showed their strong teamwork and positive attitude to see the three points home.

After three games, Weymouth are top of the league having scored 12 goals and only conceding one.

They travel to Chippenham this Saturday to hopefully see the winning streak continue.
