RED Triangle experienced a near-perfect night against Springfield B after securing a 30-4 victory.

An enjoyable evening’s table tennis with many close matches saw YMCA defeat Shipton Gorge B 26-16.

Five matches went to five sets with many other matches having tight scores despite the final result.

Shipton fought well but YMCA’s experience at this level told over the course of the evening. Ken Brake was the player of the evening with a maximum.

Park District A played Colliton X in a competitive match and secured a 29-4 win.

There was an excellent away 3-2 win from Mick Hogan (3) over Mike Doyle (8) and the away team took a leg in the doubles. However, Ray Cody and Geoff Ware took maximum points for the home side to register a comfortable win.

Shipton Gorge A were the welcome visitors to table-topping Springfield A and played some superb table tennis in accumulating their 11-point haul in a 26-11 defeat. Terry Whitworth top-scored for Shipton with six points and narrowly lost 13-11 to John Ryan (9) in the fifth.

Moses Lewis (9) had another fine evening dropping only two games in his singles.

Right from the start it took Budmouth A’s Liam Critchard (8) a five-setter to overcome Preston B’s Thierry Roy (4) but this was just a prelude to his five-setter tussle with Preston’s Simon Joslin (8) which the latter won.

Joslin then came up against the modest star of the evening, Ben Howe (9). This was the final singles and it was a titanic battle, again over five sets, of superb table tennis. Howe prevailed to applause from all players in Budmouth’s 26-14 win.

Wyke A’s 23-16 win over Budmouth B was a case of youth versus experience with the latter coming out on top except that Sophie Storey bucked the trend taking a maximum and continues her improvement.

Sam Melhuish (6) had two five-setters coming out on top against Ian South (7) but succumbing to Tony Dobbs (6).

Preston A beat Colliton C 24-12. Young Oliver Dunn played very well for his first foray into the second division and scored a valuable four points for Shipton Gorge C against Preston C. Both Tom Baldry and Dan Corren of Shipton scored maximums and Mal Smith gained seven points for Preston C with Steve Rockett (3) and Chris Harris (3) making up the difference.

A final score of 25-13 made it a good win for Shipton.

On one table Budmouth B were playing Wyke A and on the other Budmouth D were playing Wyke B and both Sophie Storey and Ollie Storey scored maximums.

However, they both ended up on the losing teams. In this match the talented Ollie lost the first two legs to Paul Robson-Rowell (8) but then came back to win the next three and he also lost a leg to Billy Blackmore (7).

In the first match of the night Storey beat Rod Wyness (6) 3-0. Alfie Moggeridge (2) took legs off both Wyness and Blackmore but Wyke were too strong for the Budmouth side in winning 24-12.

Colliton A won a very tight match against Springfield D 17-16 after winning the doubles 3-0. Colliton D had just as slim a win, 18-17, over Preston D despite losing the doubles 3-0.

Colliton B managed to win seven of the 10 matches as they came out on top 23-13 against a spirited junior side in All Saints B.

Graham Hadgraft (9) did not drop a leg and Alex Gugan (9) also managed to win all of his matches.

The closest match came in the doubles, which went the way of Colliton, 12-10 in the decider.
