WIMBORNE II 10

WEYMOUTH & PORTLAND 52

WEYMOUTH & Portland stormed to an impressive 52-10 victory over Wimborne Seconds to retain third place in Wadworth Dorset & Wilts One South.

The Seahorses were in full flow in their penultimate fixture before the Christmas break, collecting a seventh win of the season with relative ease.

When Rich Bament’s men have tasted success this season, a hatful of points have usually come with it and the Monmouth Avenue side currently have 296 this season – second-best in the league.

Weymouth’s second-biggest win this campaign got going through two Alex Toms penalties.

From the second restart, forwards Andy Bowditch and Billy Hayne broke through, offloading to James Cooper for the Seahorses’ opening try, Toms converting for 13-0.

Wimborne got themselves back into the game with an unconverted try after a spell of possession but Toms kicked his third penalty for 16-5.

And the Seasiders duly registered their second try as their forwards dominated, Hayne again strolling through the Minstermen’s defence for a converted try, capturing a 23-5 half-time lead.

Weymouth continued their scoring momentum in the second period as Toms landed a penalty prior to prop Ben Davies rampaging over for the visitors’ third converted try of the afternoon.

A Wimborne prop responded with a second unconverted try for 33-10 but Weymouth retaliated in turn as Craig Barter crossed following a five-metre scrum for 40-10.

Weymouth’s forwards then secured a turnover at a five-metre scrum for Cooper to bag his second score.

The Seahorses’ best move of the match came late on, finished off by winger Cameron Avant as Toms kicked the extras to complete a handsome win.

Speaking to Echosport, Bament said: “I’m delighted, I couldn’t have asked for anything more from the guys to be honest.

“It was comfortable in the end. They put us under pressure for 10, 15 minutes and had their moments but it was never really in doubt. There are things to work on but they’re improving week in, week out.”

On his side’s points tally, Bament added: “We talked about that and we’re scoring well. We’re second in the league for points scored but sixth for letting them in, so we’ve got to tighten up our defence.

“Scoring-wise, going forward, I can’t really complain at the minute and all the tries have been shared out, so it’s not been different people doing everything.”

Weymouth & Portland host winless Swanage & Wareham Seconds on Saturday in their final game before the festive break.
