LOANEE Weymouth midfielder Tom Whelan hopes to use his one-month spell at the Terras to fight his way back into the Yeovil Town side.

Whelan, 24, made six appearances for Yeovil this season after signing a one-year contract from Salisbury, scoring a goal in the Glovers’ 3-1 victory at Ebbsfleet.

But after dropping out of manager Darren Sarll’s starting XI, Whelan has undertaken loan spells at Chippenham and now Weymouth in a bid to force his way back into Sarll’s plans.

Whelan made his Terras’ debut in the 2-1 Vanarama National League South victory over Oxford City on Saturday.

Speaking to Echosport about his move to the Bob Lucas Stadium, he said: “Obviously it’s to get more game time and start playing more regularly.

“I was really happy and at the start of the season I was playing, so I was even more happy but as time’s gone on I’ve dropped out of the team and it hasn’t worked out the way I’d hoped for.

“We had a small squad and started bringing in more and more players as the season went on, experienced players.

“Hopefully I’ll go back and be in contention again.”

Whelan also spoke highly of his time with Weymouth so far.

“I’ve done two training sessions and (the Oxford) game and it’s all been good,” he said.

“It’s a good setup, probably one of the better ones in this league. I spoke to Mark (Molesley) a few times and he’s a good manager, very organised.

“It was nice of them to ring up Yeovil and ask me to come.”

On his debut display, Whelan added: “I probably could’ve done better but we got the win – that’s all that matters at the end of the day.”
