KEVIN Luk had fortune on his side to win the Weysports Badminton Tournament at Redlands.

Luk beat a field of 17 players, culminating in a straight sets final win over Andy Williams, who succumbed 21-13, 21-10.

Players from all around the Dorset and Somerset county came to Weymouth to compete in an action-packed day of badminton.

Men’s singles started the day at 9am and the men’s doubles followed with 13 pairs competing for the title.

Eventual winners Adam Stewart and Dean Martin won every game before beating Ashley Hembury and Graham Hutchings 21-14 and 21-17 in a brilliant final.

Ladies’ doubles was up next with four pairs competing in a round-robin format with Vicky Edwards and Helen Webb proving too strong for the other three pairs and coming out unbeaten to win the title.

The day finished with a very close mixed doubles competition, this time 16 pairs were looking to win the final trophies on offer.

Andy Williams and Sophie Limb proved too strong for their side of the group, with John Sedwards and Helen Webb winning their half of the draw on points won.

The final again was played over two quite incredible games, with eventual winners Williams and Limb taking the title 23-21, 21-13.

Tournament organiser, Charlie Squibb, said: “It was an amazing day of badminton played by all. The third tournament held over the past 12 months in the Weymouth area was again very successful.

“The standard of badminton was very high and it was amazing to see so many keen players competing in such close games.

“A huge well played to all players and a massive thank you to Redlands Community Sports Hub and all the staff for their work and services throughout the day!”
