URBOND 1

WEYMOUTH 3

UNSTOPPABLE Weymouth stormed to their eighth successive win, beating Urbond 3-1 to keep top spot in National League Division Two South.

The Seasiders have a 10-point gap to second-placed Richmond after their trip to Portsmouth.

Given confidence by their strong performance against Team Bristol the previous weekend, the away team got off to a good start winning the first set 25-22.

Weymouth, despite the set win, knew they could do better in the second by cutting out the unforced errors and relaxing under the ball.

The second set was more of a challenge as Urbond looked more organised in defence and put together some solid attacks.

This was not enough though as middle player, Sam Groom, started to link up with setter Ryan Stout to make some solid, unreturnable spikes.

The away team looked more composed this time out and this was evident in the scoreline. A close finish ended with a result of 25-19 to Weymouth.

Urbond were not going to go down without a fight and made a comeback in the third set, taking it 25-20.

League leaders Weymouth had opportunities to take a convincing lead in the set and finish the match but were unable to convert, making mistakes at a critical time in the set.

Portsmouth-based Urbond took confidence from this and powered on to finish the set.

Weymouth, annoyed at letting the opportunity of a 3-0 victory slip, made some changes and came out determined to finish the match.

With more consistent passing and more hitting options Weymouth pulled away throughout the set. Valdis Baranovs kept hitting winning shots, proving his worth as most valuable player as Weymouth won 25-18 to seal a 3-1 victory.

The Seasiders are next in action on Saturday, February 29 at Redlands against New Forest (1.30pm).
