BRENDON King labelled the departing Ed Bastick as “exceptional” ahead of the popular utility man’s impending exit.

Portland United boss King has deployed Bastick at right-back this season, with fans more accustomed to seeing the former Dorchester winger tear down the flanks from midfield.

Bastick this season galloped above 150 career appearances for the Blues and this May leaves the Weyline Stadium to take up a new career in the Metropolitan Police.

Speaking to Echosport, King lavished praise on the versatile islander.

He said: “It’s something we’ve known for a quite a while, it’s something he looked into earlier in his career and it didn’t quite happen.

“We’d like to wish him the best, he’s been a good servant to the football club. He’s a good lad – I’ve got a lot of time for him.

“He’s been exceptional for us this season, as well. You’re losing not just a good lad, a fantastic player.

“He’s been one of our best players this season, one of our most consistent. It’s disappointing but we thank him for all he’s done for the football club.”

With the Blues’ league season voided by the FA last month, subject to FA Council ratification, King admitted Bastick is a strong candidate to pick up end-of-season awards.

“He’s got a great attitude,” King said. “He doesn’t miss many training sessions, many games.

“He’s had his injury problems in the past but this season he’s played the most games he’s played for a few seasons.

“He’s felt good, he’s trained, he’s really fit and it’s disappointing, on a personal note, for the season to finish as it has.

“I think he would definitely have been up for some awards this season. I feel a little disappointed for him but it is what it is and we wish him well for the future.”
