Captain Franklyn Clarke has been named as the first player to remain with The Magpies for the 2020/21 season.

The popular midfielder, who enters the second year of a contract signed after rejoining the club during the previous campaign, became an instant fan favourite on his debut back in 2015 by scoring an injury-time equaliser in the Boxing Day derby at Weymouth.

Boss Leigh Robinson said: “It’s great for us to have such an important player and character back at the club next season. In really difficult circumstances I was really impressed with Franky’s performances and his influence in the dressing room last season as a captain.

"He’s fully aware we need a big rebuild and is behind myself and Robbie with the direction we want to take the team in and the changes we want to make. We look forward to having him back next season.”

Clarke said: “I signed a two-year contract when I signed last season and I couldn’t be happier. I’m here to stay, I’m 27 this month and don’t mind putting it out there that I would love to stay here and finish my playing career at Dorchester.

“Being captain of this football club makes me extremely proud, every time I’ve played for this football club I’ve give my all and will continue to do so. Last season hurt and is something I don’t want to experience again.

“I have to say I feel a real part of what the clubs doing at the moment – I have a very good relationship with Leigh and not only the playing side but my role as academy manager and with the new U23 team is something I’m also very passionate about. I will pass on my knowledge and experience in the game to the younger players coming through and hopefully I can play a part in there development and they make the step up to the first team one day – I would love that.

“The club has people who work tirelessly behind the scenes and it would be great to give them something to get excited about at Dorch again. Thank you to the fans for their continued support – I’ve always had a good relationship with them, keep getting behind us. I’m buzzing for the season to start as soon as it’s safe to do so.”

The Magpies will be announcing more players that have committed to the squad for the 2020/21 season over the coming days and weeks.
