FORMER Bournemouth boss Harry Redknapp believes Weymouth manager Mark Molesley would be a "good fit" for the vacant managerial hotseat at Southend.

Redknapp, who managed the Cherries from 1983 to 1992, also revealed he has spoken to Southend chairman Ron Martin regarding Molesley's talents.

Weymouth have secured back-to-back promotions under Molesley's stewardship.

Last Saturday, the Terras ended an 11-year wait to return to the National League by beating Dartford 3-0 on penalties following a 0-0 draw.

“I spoke to Ron about Mark,” Redknapp told the Southend Echo.

“I’ve followed Weymouth and seen he’s done a great job there.

“He worked with Eddie Howe at Bournemouth training the under-21s all week and then took Weymouth in the evenings and at the weekend too.

“I know Eddie absolutely loved him and said he’s very good so I really do think he’s someone with a very bright future in the game.”

Molesley is currently 4/9 favourite to replace Sol Campbell at Roots Hall.

“He would be a good fit for Southend,” said Redknapp.

“He’s hungry and he works his socks off.

“There’s not enough hours in the day for him and he wants to get to the top.

“If it didn’t work out for him then it certainly wouldn’t be because of a lack of effort.”

Former assistant to Redknapp, Kevin Bond, left the Shrimpers in early September and the former Portsmouth boss believes the Southend role would be a "tough job".

He said: “It’s a tough job for anyone but Mark is young and hungry.

“He wants to do the job and he knows non-league.

“He has big ties at Bournemouth too and I’m sure he could pull some strings to get one or two players from there.

“I really wish him well with whatever he does next.”
