BRANDON Goodship believes ex-Terras’ boss Mark Molesley is an ideal fit at Southend United.

After working together at Bournemouth and Weymouth, the duo are set to be reunited at Roots Hall, with Goodship having left the Bob Lucas Stadium to join the Blues last season.

On Thursday, Molesley followed the striker to Essex on a three-year deal after leading Weymouth to successive promotions.

Goodship played an integral role in Weymouth’s 2018/19 Southern Premier South title win, netting 37 goals to earn the division’s golden boot.

The former Yeovil man then went on to score four goals and register two assists in his opening season at Southend.

Speaking to Echosport, he said: “I’ve known him for a good number of years now.

“I worked with him at Bournemouth and Weymouth. I know how he works, how professional he likes to be and the way he likes to play football.

“He deserves the opportunity because of what he’s done, not only just at Weymouth with the back-to-back promotions, but his coaching role at Bournemouth with the under-23s.

“I see him fitting in really well. Everyone will feed off his energy and he’ll hopefully drive the club into a direction where it can start to succeed again.”

Commenting on his start to life at Southend, Goodship admitted he was left underwhelmed by his goals return as Southend were relegated from League One.

He said: “When I joined, I didn’t know what to expect.

“I ended up playing quite a few games, I was in and out of the team under certain managers and for whatever reason tailed off towards the end of the season.

“I scored some good goals, albeit not as many as I would like, but that’s football – it’s not always roses and sunshine.

“You’ve got to take the good with the bad, ride out the bad as much as you can and when the good times come you’ve got to enjoy them.

“Hopefully this season we can start to enjoy our football again and be winning more than often.”

He added: “If I perform week in, week out, I’ll put myself in a good position to be selected.

“Hopefully that will benefit the team as well. First and foremost we’ve got to put some good results together.

“We’ve got to hit the ground running in terms of when the season starts because we haven’t got long.

“It’s down to myself to put the work in on the training ground, impress the manager and Tom (Prodomo, assistant) and make sure it’s a good decision to hopefully put me in the team.
