TONY O’Connell has been named club captain for Dorchester Rugby Club.

O’Connell will also captain the third XV Gladiators side.

O’Connell will act as a mentor to younger players in transition to senior rugby.

On O’Connell’s appointment to the role, incoming chairman Tony Foot said: “I was really impressed with Tony’s commitment to the club last year captaining the Glads and putting himself forward on the replacements’ bench for the first XV home and away when required.

“He has recently worked tirelessly during lockdown encouraging players to attend pre season training resulting in over 40 attending in recent weeks. He is an excellent motivator and great club man. ‘TOC’ is a superb choice as this year’s club captain.”

Adding his views on the announcement, president Bob Andrews said he was delighted that O’Connell has been appointed as club captain.

He said: “Tony’s commitment to the club is only matched by his enthusiasm; he always plays with a smile on his face and ensures that everyone who turns up gets a game.

“Indeed, he will often give up his place in the team and is always ready to lend himself and fellow teammates to the opposition if they are short of numbers.

“Tony is a great ambassador for the club and I am sure he will fulfil his duties as club captain with his usual zeal and panache.”

All other captains from last season remain in place.
