LOOKING with a keen eye on the future, Dorchester Rugby Club’s Colts recorded a superb season, claiming two trophies.

Colts ended as the Dorset and Wiltshire Colts Premier Division winners and joint Dorset and Wiltshire Colts Cup winners – shared with Chippenham Colts as the final was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The turning point in the Premier was a hard-fought 20-17 victory at Cobras, the Corsham and Bradford-on-Avon combined team.

Cobras were second in the table and had previously beaten Dorchester at home. This was followed by a 52-12 dismissal of Chippenham, the other league contender, at home.

One of Colts’ most memorable matches was against Midsomer Norton, in a nail-biting 17-15 cup quarter-final win.

A number of the Colts’ squad broke into senior rugby towards the end of the season – including Matthew Adshead, Ben Harries, Freddie Marsden and Tom Peach, with Marsden making his first-team debut.

The future looks very promising for the upcoming season with a strong group of Dorchester under-16s joining the remaining Colts.

Lead coach Mike Sprules has already seen some of his past players move into Premiership club academies and represent their countries.

In total, Colts won 14 of 17 games last season, racking up 542 points and only conceding 248.

Dorchester are currently in Stage C of the RFU’s return to action, which involves touch rugby and the ‘Ready4Rugby’ format.
